Jacob & Co x Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon
Has any
luxury replica watches company tried so hard to capture the spirit of a high-performance car in a watch? There are other candidates—Bremont's E-Type and Hublot's LaFerrari, for example—but you'd be hard-pressed to do it more thoroughly than the Jacob & Co x Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon, a free-spinning behemoth.
What car were they trying to emulate? When the 1,000-horsepower Bugatti Veyron was launched in 2005, a 250-mph beast was the pinnacle of performance. More than a decade later, the Chiron has forced us to recalibrate our notions of speed. With half the power again—yes, 1,500 horsepower—the 16-cylinder Chiron is electronically limited to 261 mph, but is estimated to be capable of closer to 290 mph.
It sounds like a monster, and while it's incredibly fast, the Chiron is also incredibly easy to handle. I was lucky enough to drive one on the roads surrounding the Bugatti factory in Molsheim, France, a few years ago, and it felt pretty good. The four-wheel drive system puts down power in a way that doesn't make sense, and the car never feels out of control when it's moving in the distance.

Car and watch collaborations are common these days, but Bugatti has been at it for nearly a century. Back in the 1920s, Mido was making watches shaped like contemporary Bugatti radiators. Most of these highly collectible pieces were gifts from Ettore Bugatti to clients, racing drivers, and his most valued employees. The founder also commissioned Jaeger-LeCoultre to make instrumentation and Breguet to make a series of automotive clocks.
Mr. Bugatti took his watches almost as seriously as he did his cars, but after his death in 1947, the company quickly declined and went bankrupt. The modern incarnation of Bugatti, owned by Volkswagen, keeps the founder's love of
replica luxury watches alive—and, of course, his love of speed.
In the early 2000s, Bugatti partnered with Parmigiani Fleurier to launch the radical Type 370 watch, which featured a horizontal movement, an oval dial, and a 10-day power reserve. Parmigiani Fleurier produced a series of Type 370 variations in different metals and styles, as well as more traditional Bugatti watches, until it struck a deal with Jacob & Co. in early 2019. Jacob & Co kicked off the collaboration with the Epic X Chrono 110th Anniversary Limited Edition and the Twin Turbo Furious Bugatti Edition.
The Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon consists of 578 parts, with a manually wound “engine block” complete with small pistons and a “crankshaft.” As Jacob & Co. puts it, when you press the right crown, “the crankshaft turns and the pistons move up and down, just like a real internal combustion engine.”

The manually wound flying tourbillon movement was designed from scratch and took more than a year to develop. The movement is surrounded by two “exhaust ports” and the tourbillon window mimics the Chiron's horseshoe grille. If you still can't get the automotive theme, check out the power reserve indicator at three o'clock – it's designed like a miniature fuel gauge, a clever touch that shows the company really thought through every detail.
